Who is admitted to the PICU?
The PICU admits any child who gets extremely sick and needs medically intensive care that cannot be provided on the main medical floors. Asthma, heart problems, severe infections, diabetes complications, and serious injuries are among the most common conditions.
How long is a child expected to remain in the PICU?
Your child’s condition will determine how long they stay in the PICU. Some people only need one day. Others may experience it for weeks or even months at a time. You can speak with the doctor or nurses to get a sense of how long it will take.
What sets a PICU apart from the hospital's other departments?
The PICU is a part of the hospital where critically ill kids get the best feasible treatment. The ability to continuously monitor blood pressure, heart rate, and breathing sets it apart from general medical floors. Additionally, the PICU’s medical staff is capable of providing intensive therapies like ventilators or breathing machines that need careful medical supervision.
How old can a patient be admitted to PICU?
The majority of patients in pediatric intensive care units are younger than eighteen. However, some individuals between the ages of 18 and 21 may also receive treatment in the PICU if they have certain medical conditions that call for the PICU’s assistance.
