Diagnostic Laparoscopy & Hysteroscopy: Assessing Fertility Concerns
Diagnostic Laparoscopy and Hysteroscopy are minimally invasive procedures used to evaluate fertility issues such as blocked fallopian tubes, uterine abnormalities, or endometriosis.
Laparoscopy is performed to view and access the exterior of the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes and other structures within the pelvis. Hysteroscopy is performed to view the internal cavity of the uterus, identify abnormalities and perform certain corrective procedures.
These procedures help identify potential causes of infertility and guide treatment decisions.
When Are These Procedures Recommended?
  • Unexplained infertility
  • Suspected endometriosis or uterine abnormalities
  • Failed IVF cycles

If an abnormal condition is detected during diagnostic hysteroscopy, operative laparoscopy can be performed simultaneously to correct it.

It may take at least 4 to 6 weeks for you to feel completely better after your surgery. Most people can stop taking pain medication and gradually increase their activity level after the first two weeks.

During hysterolaparoscopy, patients are usually given general anaesthesia to ensure they remain asleep during the procedure and do not experience any pain. However, some women may experience mild discomfort, bloating, or cramping after the procedure.

An operative hysteroscopy is considered minor surgery. It doesn’t usually require a hospital overnight stay. Unlike more invasive procedures that open your abdomen to access organs, a hysteroscopy can be performed through your vagina.
